Indoor Air Quality

IAQ Testing & Solutions

Indoor Air Quality TestThe Air Advice Logo

Our testing involves placing a small monitor in your living space for 3-4 days that samples your air every minute for a variety of contaminants that affect your air quality.  Since your air quality is constantly changing, this method yields better results than simply taking a sample reading at only one point in time.  The report provided to you shows you the levels of various pollutants and conditions, including:

  • Are you constantly adjusting your thermostat?  Room temperatures can fluctuate as much as 2 degrees C from the thermostat setting, making you constantly feel like it's too hot or too cold.  This monitor can detect if you often fall out of the Comfort Zone, and whether you may improve your comfort or realize cost savings from a programmable thermostat or programming adjustments.

Relative Humidity

  • Did you know that the Comfort Zone for humidity changes with the weather?  This zone is lower in the winter than it is in the summer.  Lethbridge winters often bring cold, dry air that requires a humidifier to increase the moisture content of the air.  Too little humidity makes breathing less comfortable and can cause cracks in wooden furniture and flooring.  However, too much humidity can cause moisture to condense on your windows, damage finishes, and promote mold growth.  Let us help to ensure that you have the right humidity in your home.

Particle Allergens

  • Is your air worsening your asthma and allergy symptoms?  Particle allergens are generally not a cause for concern when daily average levels are below 10 ug/m3.  However, levels above this can be be problematic for young children and the elderly, and be a sign of inadequate filtration.  Identifying this problem and reducing your levels of particulate can get you breathing a sigh of relief.

Chemical Pollutants (VOCs)

  • How bad is your VOC level?  Volatile Organic Compounds are the result of off-gassing of building materials (ie. furniture, paints), and use of checmicals in your home (ie. cleaners, deodorizing sprays).  Lower levels can irritatate asthma and allergy symptoms, while higher levels can cause headaches and liver/kidney problems, and even cause your air conditioner coil to prematurely fail (see our Ask Airtech section for more information).  Fortunately, there are solutions to this growing issue.

Carbon Monoxide (CO)

  • Did you know most CO monitors only raise the alarm when dangerous levels (above 20 ppm) are reached?  This is the signal to get out of your house and get help.  Levels above 5 ppm can cause headaches and nausea, but are likely to remain undetected by most monitors.  CO is a colorless, odorless gas that can be a dangerous byproduct of any gas appliance (furnace, stove, hot water tank) or vehicle in an attached garage.  Identifying this issue and resolving it early will help avoid risk to your health.

Carbon Dioxide(CO2)

  • Do you have adequate fresh air introduced into your home?  Carbon Dioxide can quickly build up inside buildings when large numbers of people are present.  Like CO, CO2 is colorless and odorless.  Levels above 750 ppm can

Levels identified are then compared to known acceptable levels or ranges, and problem areas are highlighted. Based on these findings, Airtech can then provide you with an explanation of what this means to you, and what options are available to improve your air quality.

For example, you may find that your dry, itchy throat is due to elevated chemical or particulate levels, and not due to low humidity. Or, you may find that monoxide levels are a safety concern, but that they just have not yet reached a level high enough to trip your detector alarm.

Rather than guess at your problems and merely sell you what others have purchased, we prefer to identify the issues and back it with real data before making a recommendation.

We're so confident in this process, we'll even credit you back the cost of the test when you purchase the recommended solution.
